Expectations

  • Please bring a face mask and water bottle. We require coaches and athletes to wear a mask at all times, per the current public health directives in Mecklenburg County.
  • Parents and spectators are not allowed to watch tryouts. This is done to limit distractions for athletes and coaches, but also because there is limited space in the gym.
  • We will be engaging athletes in drills to assess: skill (fundamentals and positional), volleyball IQ, communication, presence, mindset, and alignment with The QCVA Way.
  • We will follow up with tryout participants by Tuesday evening at the latest. This will give us time to make thoughtful selections and contact you about your standing.

Experience

We know tryouts are inherently stressful, but it’s important to us to create an environment where athletes feel like they can show us their best. For that reason, we intend to foster a tryout experience where everyone is welcomed, included and empowered. We ask that each athlete contribute to that effort: introduce yourself to others, be kind, celebrate good plays and root each other on if someone is having a tough time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many teams are you planning to host?
We’re planning to run 3-5 National level teams (14s/15s through 18s). The makeup of the teams will be determined based on who returns to QCVA and who makes our club during tryouts. We will aim for 10 athletes per team. The max will be 12 per team. We are planning for QCVA teams to attend a minimum of eight tournaments. Read more about our travel teams.

How much are you going to charge for the 2022 season?
Tuition is $2,100, which covers tournament entry fees, facility usage, equipment, coaching fees, administration fees, college recruiting support, and leadership workshops.

What about masks and vaccinations?
Per current Mecklenburg County public health requirements, masks must be worn in any indoor public place, business or establishment within the City of Charlotte. Therefore, we will require masks for our programs — as we did all of the 2020-21 season. We encourage vaccinations for athletes who are eligible to receive them.

Why didn’t you hold tryouts in early August?
We take pride in making decisions that we wholeheartedly feel are best for the athletes and our coaches. We did not think it is a responsible or healthy decision to encourage girls to tryout for both high school and club teams just days apart. We know the tryout process is very stressful for athletes, and we want to change that culture to the extent that’s possible. Finally, QCVA does not need to make decisions primarily based on monetary outcomes due to our business structure.

What if I don’t want to play travel ball but receive training?
As part of our mission to expand access to the game of volleyball in the Charlotte area, the High Performance Training Program develops volleyball skill and builds volleyball IQ among young people who are eager to grow as players. Read more and register here.
